Preparation for Sunday Service
For Sunday the 28th of July, 2024 (Proper 12)
As we gather for worship Sunday, the readings from Scripture present God as incredibly powerful but also hugely compassionate. Though in response to sin he had destroyed virtually all living beings by a flood, God makes an everlasting covenant that he will never do it again—and that means regardless of how much he is provoked and how evil the earth becomes. St. Mark records Jesus’ astounding power over wind and wave along with his compassion toward all who were sick. Well might we join St. Paul in marveling at the vast extent of Christ’s love and join in his enthusiastic doxology: “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Eph. 3:20-21).
